Network With Purpose

Most people network without purpose and wonder why it doesn’t work.

Here’s how to do it intentionally.

In a recent coaching session, my client and I unpacked what networking really means. It started with one simple (but powerful) question:

What do you actually want from the relationship?

Because honestly, networking is a lot like dating.

Both people show up hoping to learn something about each other… and to see if there’s potential for something meaningful.

Inside your organization

You already have a shared connection, the company itself. Use that to your advantage. Before you reach out, do your homework:

  • What’s their background or career path?
  • Have they given presentations or led projects that inspired you?
  • What do you know about their vision or current pain points?
  • Then, get clear on your why. Are you looking for: A mentor or sponsor? More visibility to senior leaders? Insights into a different function or feedback to grow? Access to growth opportunities?

Being specific about your ask helps others know how to best support you and builds trust faster.

    Outside your organization

Here, you’re building connection from scratch, so the introduction matters. Offer a few “strings” when you reach out that they can pull on: shared interests, expertise, or a challenge you’re both solving for.

And again, know your why: Stay relevant in your industry? Explore trends? Learn about best practices? Test the waters for new opportunities?

    Make it mutual

Every strong connection has give and take. Think about what you can offer in return: a new perspective, an introduction, or a chance to champion their work.

And don’t forget the “second date.”

Follow up. Send a note. Grab coffee.

That’s how relationships, and opportunities, actually grow.

    ACTIVATE Your Network

When you know your why, you can be intentional about who you connect with. Think of these archetypes as your networking “chemistry set”:

    A
Amplifier. Boosts your visibility. Spotlights your work.
    C
Connector. Knows the right people. Opens doors.
    T
    Trailblazer. Models the path ahead.
    I
Influencer. Uses their voice to create opportunity for you.
    V
    Visionary. Expands your thinking.
    A
Advisor. Offers strategic guidance for growth.
    T
Teacher. Deepens your skills and knowledge.
    E
    Energizer. Fuels your motivation.

Don’t just network, ACTIVATE your connections.

Build relationships that amplify your impact, connect you to opportunity, and energize your growth.

Which archetype are you most focused on connecting with right now, or which one do you play for others?
